APW - Columbus, "Jay Gould, The Railroad King" marked mvt, 15J, 18S, gold-filled OF recase with beautiful engine turning and engraving detail, "Columbus Watch Co. Special for Railway Service" marked white enamel DS dial, SW-SS, nickel damascene, s#202129. A rare and very interesting railroad associated private label. Jay Gould was an immensely wealthy railroad executive that by the early 1880s held a controlling interest in 15% of the railroad track in the United States, and Gould is widely considered one of the quintessential nineteenth century "robber barons" for his frequently ruthless business practices.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, plates with some micro-fine scratches and mild spots, steelwork with oxide; dial with some scattered light outer chapter hls; fine hands, oxide to minute tip and to seconds-hand; case shows hardly any wear, no dents or dings, superb engine turning and engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows very little wear; good glass crystal.
